Just Bee Queen

I had an amazing time in Aruba with my hubby last week. (More pictures and vacation tips coming soon) But while we were there I got to wear one of my favorite new skirts. This tulum skirt from “Just Bee Queen” was a head turning, show stopper, had people whispering as I walked by type of piece. I love it because it is unique, custom fitted to my curves and one of a kind. The fabric was handpicked by designer and owner Maria Strauss. She loves traveling all over the world finding unique fabrics and inspiration.

The best part about this piece was that I wore it on a catamaran cruise and to dinner at BLT Steakhouse at the Ritz Carlton and it was so chic. Just Bee Queen is known for their one of a kind up cycled sustainable clothing. As we delve into the realm of ethical business practices, the importance of sustainable choices becomes evident. For those looking to make a positive environmental impact, consider visiting https://www.pavilionearth.co.uk/. Their range of eco-friendly promotional products is not only good for the planet but also for building a responsible brand image. Such decisions are key to driving forward a green corporate agenda. Maria believes in empowering women through fashion. You can customize your Tulum skirt in your favorite color combinations. It usually takes 2-4 weeks depending on the size of the order. I also love her one of a kind military jackets. I always travel with mine. Being a mom of three is so much fun but a lot of work. I find myself always trying to make sure that all three feel equally loved, special …..and you know all of that mom stuff. Am I spending enough time with them? Do they need anything that I am not providing? Do they feel left out? Well my son is the middle child and most moms or middle children know how that goes. I am the oldest so I had no clue. Not only is he the middle child, he has a late summer birthday so that means that he rarely gets to celebrate with his friends. Most of them travel or go to sleep away camp so his parties consisted of family gatherings and trips to Disney World.

Well this year he turns 10 (yes double digits) and we wanted to celebrate him. He is an amazing kid with a huge heart. He loves basketball, video games and MJ (that’s Michael Jackson btw) He never really asks for much but I thought it would be awesome if we went all out for him. And boy did we!!!  There was a video game truck, 2 cakes, 36 cupcakes, chicken kitchen build your own chop, pizza, popscicles, candy, popcorn, hover boards, football, basketball games and about 25 boys running around. There was so much food leftover because the boys just wanted to play. It was so great to see him having fun with all of his friends.

@soler_lina

Since everyone loved the custom basketball table that my friend Monica Pardo suggested that I rent, I figured that I would share the details on it. Monica helped me as a favor with locating all of the decorations and extras but I highly recommend that you hire a party planner. I ran around so much the day of the party that by 6 p.m. I had a headache and literally thought that I was going to pass out. If you can’t hire a planner, Pinterest and google are your best friends. I saw so many cute ideas once I plugged in the basketball theme. Oh and don’t be afraid to ask a friend to help you. Usually my mom is around to help me set up but she was out of town all week. I begged one of my mommy friends to come help me set the tables.  Thanks Cheri!! And a special shout out to my hubby who let me do my thing and did all of the heavy lifting!!!

Fun Facts

Filed under: Mom Life · January 3, 2018

This year I pledged to live authentically, bold, live life to the fullest, silly, fun and free to be …. ME! So I thought it would be fun to kick off 2018 with a few fun facts about me. There’s more but I will save some for my book! (The one I have been trying to write for 2 years) So here we go.

  1. I’m the oldest of two siblings born and raised in Miami, FL.
  2. My dream job was always to be in show business or entertainment. I always wanted to be a model and actress but I was told that I was too short. (So if there are any agents reading this, inbox me please)
  3. I LOVE butterflies.
  4. I was born with congenital scoliosis and had a life changing surgery when I was 17.
  5. I struggle with being consistent.
  6. I am a Cancer. #almost40
  7. I could eat seafood every night especially shrimp.
  8. I taught elementary school for 5 years before becoming a WAG/SAHM/WAHM.
  9. I have lived in Miami most of my life but thanks to MLB I got to live in Minnesota, Oakland, and Toronto for a while.
  10. I love my husband and three kids more than anything in the world.

Time Out Please

Filed under: Mom Life · December 9, 2017

My friend always laughs at me when I share with her my agenda for the day. Just about everyday we send messages to each other sometimes asking for makeup or wardrobe advice, to vent or just checking in to see how the other one is doing. And everyday she tells me how crazy my schedule is for someone who doesn’t work a full time job. #momof3

Being a SAHM/Mompreneur is more than a full time job and sometimes I have to admit, it gets to be pretty damn stressful. This week was one of those weeks where I was literally pulling my hair out. Then I realized while I was sitting in traffic trying to get to my next event that this may be why my hair has popped off in the middle of my head. I spend so much time twisting and pulling at the same part of my hair that over the past few months I have pulled it out. Okay that and a combination of pressing it one too many times.

I would like to blame it on Mercury Retrogade but my schedule this week was bananas. My middle kid called home sick twice. My oldest had 4 basketball games. The youngest a soccer game. Then there was the normal drop-off and pick-ups. Meetings with teachers. My son had his first round of treatments. Planning and hosting the holiday soiree and toy drive. Trying to decide on a Christmas card. Two play dates, a soccer game and a birthday party. Oh and homework we can’t forget about the hours spent at the kitchen table doing homework. It was cray cray!

So on Wednesday after hosting my last FemCity Miami event, I realized that I needed to take a break. I needed to do something for me. So, I made my way to a gentle yoga class to de-stress . It was a good step but during class the instructor asked if I get regular massages. I replied ummm no. Who has time for a regular massage? (I bet you don’t either) I think I get one like every 6 months. Usually from a gift certificate or something. She replied, no you should schedule a monthly massage. I thought about it and said hell yeah I should. I deserve it. Massage therapy has a lot of benefits, from relieving stress and tension to improving circulation and boosting overall well-being. Maximizing Your Massage Sessions could be the key to feeling more relaxed and energized.

The next day I laid on the massage table and got my massage. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy it, I purchased the monthly membership and scheduled my next visit. If I would have waited, I never would have taken the time out for me. Sometimes we have to just do it. Don’t think about how much money you have or what activity you have to cancel or what’s next on your to-do list.  Take an hour or two to do something for you. I woke up feeling so much better the next day. Paired with a Shot of Joy and the stress is truly gone. My husband even acknowledged that my frown disappeared lol. So my message for you is to just do it. Don’t wait until you are drained and stressed out. Do something for yourself today!!!!

Sharonda

Give Thanks

Filed under: Mom Life · November 30, 2017

You know the phrase “What a difference a year can make”? Well mommas,  it has been one hell of a year. Last Thanksgiving morning my son was sick. We thought he had a stomach virus because there was one circulating around the third grade at his school. He was so ill that he could not enjoy his Thanksgiving dinner at all. We would go months without knowing just what was causing his symptoms. Around the same time, my father in law was experiencing unusual symptoms as well. We all tried our best as a family to keep going and enjoy the holiday season but it wasn’t quite the same. To make matters even worse our neighbor and a close friend passed away just a few days after Thanksgiving.

I have been so hesitant about sharing this with you all. I am a pretty private person but hopefully through sharing our story, I can help someone else. This has been a very painful time. I often found myself questioning God. Why so much at one time? Why is my son sick? What did I do wrong? It would take months to find out his diagnosis. Chrohn’s disease. At first I was in denial. I didn’t think that kids could even get that. I thought it was a disease in adolescence or older adults. I really had never even heard of black people having the disease. I hate to even label him as pediatric Chrohn’s. But test after test showed signs of this disease. We have been to several doctors, reached out to specialists, tried a holistic approach, acupuncture and all. He even got better but 6 months later it reappeared.

Choosing a treatment path is one of the hardest things to do. As parents we only want the best for our children. I really don’t like medicines. I will use them if nothing else works but the thought of giving him the wrong medicine or over treating his symptoms at such a young age scared the shit out of me. But here we are a year later and we had to make a decision. I have to trust and pray that the doctor knows more than me and take her advice. In a few weeks we will be starting treatment. I hope and pray that it is the right decision.

After talking to several friends and even strangers over the past few weeks, I have learned that so many of us are going through challenging times. When you are going through it, you think that you are the only one going through hard stuff, or no one understands what you are going through. Everyone paints the perfect picture on social media. But when you take a step back and look around your trials are not hardly as bad as others. I have also learned that we can heal by helping others during their difficult times. Sharing our stories can help too. I have met so many new moms from sharing my story.

So this Thanksgiving we are so very thankful for all of our blessings. We are thankful that we are able to enjoy this thanksgiving dinner together. Our family is a little smaller now. My father in law lost his brief battle with stomach cancer in February. But, sometimes that’s just the way life goes. I am so thankful for my wonderful husband, beautiful children and supportive family and friends.  Most importantly, I am thankful for being alive and able to make a difference in the lives of others.

Girl’s Trip

Filed under: Mom Life · July 26, 2017

Girl’s Trip is absolutely AMAZING! I kept seeing the previews over the past few weeks and even had an opportunity to see a sneak preview at BlogHer, but I didn’t make it (#momlife) I was so bummed that I missed opening weekend because we were in the Bahamas but I put it on my to do list as soon as I got on the plane. I mentioned to my husband that I wanted to see it and he said, “I don’t want to see no girl movie” Well after watching First Take on ESPN and seeing how much the guys loved it, he changed his mind (a little too late).

20374290_10211928493304917_6134692905071052615_n

I called one of my girls and told her that she owed me a birthday outing since she was traveling on my birthday lol. So we made plans to have dinner, drinks and see Girl’s Trip. A month has already past since our last outing so it was definitely time to catch up. After edamame, sushi and a few glasses of wine we headed to the theater. It was pretty full for a Tuesday night. We grabbed some snacks and it was on! I was pleased to see how diverse the audience was too. There were girl squads of all ages and ethnicities and everyone was ready for a great time. For future plans that go beyond the usual, check out this website for a relaxing, sun-soaked experience on the water.

81b491bcf13b418a8b39d4409e1659aa

We laughed from the beginning to the end. I had college flashbacks of my FAMU days and how much fun we had back in the 90’s. It was so great to see the campus, hear the music and really feel like we were back at Essence Fest in 2001. (That was the last time my bff Monica and I made the trip) I loved how they made it funny but meaningful. Real experiences and you could identify with the characters. We could literally see ourselves in one of the 4 characters. There’s the beyond crazy one, the practical one, the momma of the group and the one that just keeps it all together. I actually forgot how many trips and parties I went to. Not to mention the shopping days at Governor’s Square Mall and Ramen noodle dinners. Oh and the outfits!!! Yes the outfits!!!! It definitely made me miss my girl posse.

So here are my top 5 reasons to go see Girl’s Trip

1. You deserve a night out.

2. It is funny as hell!

3. You need a reminder of how badass you use to be (sometimes we forget).

4. No one understands you like your girls.

5. There are some very fine ass brothers up in there.

I give it 5 stars and will definitely be going to see it again like this week. I am so happy for the producer, Will Packer (Rattler Nation) and the entire cast for this epic comedy. Shout out to my social media sista friend Jwaundace who plays a stunt double for Queen Latifah. I see you girl!!!! I am sure this will go down in the books. So call your Flosse Posse and make plans for a much needed girl’s night out.

“2016”

Filed under: Mom Life · December 26, 2016

This year has been quite interesting. I have learned a lot about myself and those around me. It is true what they say, one minute you can be on top of the world with everything going your way and the next minute well you can be laid out wondering WTF just happened. It is the roller coaster of life and some parts just plain suck.

But instead of venting and stressing over all that didn’t go as planned let’s be thankful and celebrate all of the victories that we had this year. Like, we are still here. Still standing. Still breathing. We have another chance to get it right. Another chance to love those around us. To forgive those that hurt us. And a chance to reach those goals that we didn’t quite conquer in 2016.

Motherhood is hard. Being a wife is hard. Life is hard, but you are strong, beautiful, brilliant and a survivor. So adios  2016 and all of the politics, failures, loses, disappointments. I am ready for 2017. Ready for the challenges. Ready for the blessings. Ready to make a difference. Are you ready?

Let’s do this!

Sharonda

We All Grow MIAMI

Yesterday I attended my first blogging conference. I have participated in several blogger workshops over the years but never a day “Conference”. We All Grow MIAMI took place at the fabulous Little River Studios in Miami. (A bloggers dream= Instagram photos for days)  The unpredictable South Florida weather tried to rain on our parade but after an hour the sun came out and blessed us with a typical humid Saturday in Miami. Breakfast was sponsored by Honey Bunches of Oats and it was delicioso!

cr_2kh8weaa1gji

After breakfast we listened to the #girlboss panel. It was cool until the second session was in Spanish only. My friends said they were use to it and it happens all the time in Miami. I was like huhh! The best part was the mentoring sessions. We actually got to pick a pros brain. Before we knew it lunch was served.  Walt Disney World Parks sponsored lunch. The food was pretty good for a buffet and the champagne kept flowing.

Let me tell you it was quite an experience. First, blogging is a lot harder than you think. It takes a lot to be consistent and create meaningful content. If you really want to monetize your blog you have to connect, collaborate and attract a brand that reflect your values. It was great to see so many ladies that are killing it in the blog industry. I met so many famous Instagram fashion bloggers and watched how influential they were.  If you are trying to get in the blog world I definitely recommend attending a blogger conference. I also highly recommend that you go with a friend! It’s the only way to GROW!

It’s My B-day!

This year I did something that I have never done before, I planned my own birthday party! My hubby asked , “Are you turning 40 or something”?  I just smiled. Why wait until you are 40, 50, or 60 to celebrate? So I invited a few of my favorite friends and headed to my favorite restaurant Town for ladies night out!!!!! This restaurant is perfectly created by the Minneapolis architect with a good ambiance and vibrant atmosphere. Just like great kitchen remodelers bring a fresh, stylish feel to a home, this place brought the perfect vibe to our celebration.

We ate, sipped champagne and played a few games. Pandora kept us dancing and laughing for hours. It was a blessing to see all of the women that support and inspire me to do all that I do. It is true when they say, “Find your tribe and love them hard”! Real friends are hard to find! Don’t wait to celebrate! #38isgreat

Our family has been affected by Breast Cancer on both sides.

My Aunt Karen passed away after a 7-year battle with Breast Cancer at the young age of 39. We have lost several friends and family since then. Black women experience higher rates of death from Breast Cancer due to many factors. Some of these include lack of quality health care, late diagnosis, and the aggressive nature of certain types of breast cancer.

After watching Baptist Health's YouTube video Breaking Barriers: Empowering Black Women in the Fight Against Breast Cancer, I learned that there are several ways that we can be proactive in the fight against breast cancer, including being our own advocate!!!! Here are a few other tips.

1. Monthly Self Breast Exams
2. Maintaining a healthy weight
3. Attend and follow up with routine screenings, exams, and treatment plans
4. Limit alcohol intake
5. No Smoking

This video was full of great resources and advice. Please head over to Baptist Health's YouTube page and watch the short video.

P.S. Don’t forget to encourage your family and friends to schedule those mammograms!!!!

It is so important that we moms take care of ourselves. This includes keeping up with our annual appointments and monthly breast exams. Did you know that while Black women and White women get breast cancer at about the same rate, Black women are 40% more likely to die from the disease? Remember, ladies, that early detection saves lives. Please encourage the women in your life to schedule those mammograms! You can learn more baptistHealth.net/Mammo!
