Waiting Room

Filed under: Mom Life · November 18, 2017

As I sit and wait anxiously at my annual OB/GYN appointment I instantly gasped because the room was packed. Women of all different ages and ethnicities waiting for their name to be called.  I can’t help but notice all of the expecting moms. I overheard a mom sharing the news of twins over the phone with someone special. She was there for her second ultrasound appointment and today she was able to see the gender. She was thrilled that she was having a boy and a girl. Her mom was with her and she said she didn’t care the gender, just as long as they are both healthy. I definitely remember those days. Not the twin part but the excitement of seeing those ultrasounds, confirmation of those tiny swift heartbeats and the relief that everything was ok. For a minute I must admit that I got a little baby fever.

The nervousness of waiting 35 weeks to hold them and see God’s work. It is the most wonderful feeling in the world. Then you take them home and are clueless about what the next 18 years will hold. All of the joys and pains of motherhood. The sleepless nights, the leaky boobs, the doctor appointments at the obgyn clinic, the first day of school, the birthday parties, the unexpected news of an illness or disorder. There are so many phases but no matter what they are your babies and the same love and excitement that you had for them from the first flutter in the womb to watching them walk across stage to receive an award never goes away.

On this journey I have met so many strong and beautiful mothers. Women who have served as role models to me and others that I have been able to mentor and encourage. It is not easy being a mom. It is one of the most challenging, exciting, loving, magical journey that you will ever experience. Some days are a lot harder than others but when I look back it was the best thing that ever happened to me. So no matter what phase of motherhood you are in right now, count your blessings and enjoy the ride!

Sharonda

Fashionista Friday: Red Hot

This is my favorite time of the year.  The weather is slowly changing. I repeat slowly changing. The time change sucks but after a few days you get use to it. Starbucks rolls out their holiday menu and Santa’s Enchanted Forest reopens so you know Christmas is almost here. My calendar does get a little hectic these last two months of the year.  Between the kid’s sports activities, school functions and play dates, don’t forget the play dates, some days are definitely longer than others. Then there’s all of the fun holiday parties, fundraisers, and networking events. Yes, it can get a little cray cray but I love it. And yes, I get overwhelmed sometimes but I have learned that if it is not aligned with my soul to just say no.

When all of the invitations start coming in, the first question that usually pops up is what am I going to wear? I usually head to Zara. They never disappoint. Sometimes the lines can be super long but I have learned that if you go before the lunch rush, it’s not that bad. I also have noticed that the prices seem to be going up. It still isn’t as bad as some stores but be prepared. Most of the time I am in a hurry so I just buy a few different outfits and pray that at least one of them works out. (They always work out #shopaholic)

On Thursday, FemCity Miami celebrated the launch of the Fall Collective Edition at Kendra Scott in Brickell City Centre. I was feeling very festive and bold so I bought a bright red dress. Everyone loved my dress so I thought that I would share the details.  You won’t believe that it was under $30. So, if you are looking for a cute affordable outfit for an upcoming event check I highly recommend Zara! Happy Shopping!

Fashionista Friday: Trending Now

Filed under: Fashion, Fit Moms · November 4, 2017

Every Sporty Momma loves a hot handbag and this season’s bags are cray cray! The trend seems to be the more colorful, graphic and shapely the better. Oh and top handles are like works of art. This is the time of year that I start my holiday wish list so I am spending quite a lot of time browsing the internet and window shopping to see which bag will make it to my wish list. I personally think that Gucci is leading the way with this trend. Here are a few of my favorite bags! What’s your favorite? Happy Shopping y’all!

Got Wheatgrass?

Filed under: Fit Moms · October 24, 2017

It is not easy trying to keep up with the hubby, kids, work, and well life. But I have learned that if you take care of your body first, it definitely helps. This is that hectic time of the year. Yes, the holiday season has arrived. The season where we go, go, go until we get so run down that we get sick. I am always looking for supplements that will boost my immunity. Did you know that two ounces of wheatgrass is equivalent to eating 4 pounds of green vegetables? It also has more vitamin C than oranges.  Have you added wheatgrass to your weekly routine? I say weekly cause I am not going to front I haven’t used it daily just yet. I have seen some improvement with my digestion. Here are a few reasons why you should add it to your routine.

  1. Lowers blood pressure
  2. Detoxifies
  3. Increases energy
  4. Anti-Inflammatory
  5. Stimulates metabolism
  6. Immune System Booster
  7. Aids in digestion
  8. Anti-aging properties

Wheatgrass can be purchased at most grocery stores or your local juice bars. I love getting it already pressed at Jugo Fresh. It can run $2-$5 per shot. Some people like to juice it right at home. Whatever works best for you, I highly recommend adding it to your diet.

Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant

Filed under: Fit Moms · October 18, 2017

For the past few months I have been on a quest to improve my overall health.  You know like trying to find more natural products from healthier food options to cleaning products,  to lipstick, skin care and yes deodorant. The food thing is fairly easy. Just buy organic and well…cook more often. Skincare is pretty easy with Beautycounter and Goop. But what about deodorant? Sporty Mommas can’t walk around smelling sweaty.

A few weeks ago I was in Urban Outfitters about to check out and saw Schmidt’s deodorant. If it is at the display near the checkout line you know it must be good. I picked up the Lavender and Sage because I love lavender and the color purple. The next day I was hesitant to put it on before my workout class. So I didn’t. I actually let it sit on my bathroom counter for a week before testing it out. When I finally did, I was pleasantly surprised. I went all day without smelling myself. Lol, I know it sounds gross but y’all know how it is. A few days went buy and it worked very well but I wasn’t crazy about the scent so this time I headed to Whole Foods (well I am there like every other day) and purchased a new scent. They have several scents to choose from but the Rose and Vanilla is my favorite. It is a little sweet and smells like flowers.

Schmidt’s is perfect for busy active moms and I feel good about bringing healthier options into my home. Schmidt’s naturals are made from plants and minerals, and are free of aluminum and artificial fragrances. They even make soaps and there are unscented sticks for those of you that don’t want the extra fragrance. So if you are looking for a natural deodorant I say give Schmidt’s a try. You won’t regret it.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Filed under: Fit Moms · October 10, 2017

I met Cindy a few years ago through a friend actually a fellow Fem when I was trying to connect with a local breast cancer charity. We spoke for about an half hour and I knew that she was special. She shared her story of survival and the work that she continues to do in Miami and around the world for women affected by breast cancer. She is currently working on filming a documentary. We have been trying to meet in person for about two years but something always comes up. This year I made the extra effort to make sure that I could get to her annual fashion show at Bloomingdales. After attending Blogalicious yesterday and waking up feeling under the weather, I knew that I had to keep it moving and get my a$$ to Bloomingdales. I still haven’t given Cindy a hug in person because I had to rush off to my son’s basketball game (#momlife) but I am so glad that I made it to the show.

Cindy

The show wasn’t just fun it was educational. I learned that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. I learned that dogs can get breast cancer too. Did you know that most of the funds that are raised do not actually go to treatment or research? I also learned about METAvivor . METAvivor is dedicated to the specific fight of women and men with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. It is currently the only organization in the US dedicated to awarding annual stage 4 breast cancer research. Ironically, a friend of ours Lizzy is currently fighting metastatic breast cancer as I am learning about all of this. Lizzy is a beautiful mom of 2 that also needs our prayers and support. Her home was recently destroyed by Hurricane Irma.  Her family has set up a gofundme page to assist with their unexpected expenses.

Lizzy

Throughout the fashion show, beautiful women (all breast cancer survivors) strutted down the runway. Most were moms just like us.  Some were diagnosed as early as their late twenties. It was so amazing to see their strength and to hear some of their stories. It was inspiring to see them walk the runway with pride and radiate beauty. Watching them reminded me of my aunt Karen Pendergrass, who passed away at age 39 from breast cancer. She was a beautiful wife and mom of 2.  She is the reason why I am so passionate about fundraising and finding a cure. I know that medicines are getting better and better but I pray that one day they really find a cure.

Self Love

Filed under: Mom Life · October 7, 2017

Moms, we have so much love in our hearts and we are constantly giving it away freely. In fact, we are so busy sprinkling our love dust on everyone, we forget about caring for ourselves. Making the choice to show ourselves a little love daily, can replenish our hearts and souls so that we can keep giving without feeling completely drained. Try one of these self-love suggestions today!

1.       Drink your coffee while it’s hot. Every morning my coffee goes cold. That delicious, invigorating caffeine aroma fills the air, making its way to my nose. But before I can finish raising  my cup to my lips… someone is crying or pooping or my husband has lost something that he needs right away. Moms are wired to respond to everything immediately. It’s like we think the house will fall if we don’t attend to every situation in that very instant. But we need to remember to tend to ourselves too. No one will collapse if you sit for 2.5 minutes to drink your coffee.

2.       Get in touch with an old friend. In the last year, I found myself so wrapped up in the work of motherhood, I barely saw my friends. I could count on one hand the number of times I met with anyone outside of family. Last week I had the chance to go to lunch with 2 girlfriends. I had an amazing time. We shared our joys and struggles and we laughed and laughed and laughed (I had way too much wine). I felt like my soul had been refreshed. Even texting or video chatting with an old friend and sharing about life, can help us moms feel renewed. Motherhood can be isolating and it’s important to connect with people that we love and trust.

3.       Get moving. There are a million reasons or excuses why we don’t  get active, but there are so many more reasons why we should. Movement and exercise releases stress and gives us more energy. Toddler won’t nap? Put on your favorite dance song and teach that little one some moves. If they’re napping, take 10-15 minutes out of that nap time to do a short workout. There are numerous free exercise apps that can give you suggested workout routines that suit your particular body goals.

4.       Beautify. Ask a trusted friend or family member to babysit for an hour or two, so you can spend some time on you! Get a haircut or a mani/pedi. If money is tight you can do it at home! Treat yourself to a “diy” pedicure or facial after the kids are in bed. Take an extra-long shower and put an olive oil treatment in your hair. A little self-care goes a long way to help us remember ourselves and feel human and beautiful again.

5.       Meditate. Motherhood is overwhelming and all-consuming. Moms can get bogged down and depressed by the never-ending chores and tasks that come along with the job. When you can, take a few quiet moments for yourself. Sit in a comfortable spot, close your eyes, and take some deep breaths. Let your mind be filled with all the things you are grateful for in your life. Some relaxing music might help the process too! Just a few minutes of this can change your perspective and outlook for the day.

Love yourselves today moms, you deserve it!

How to stay positive in a negative situation!

Every time we turn on the news or open up our Facebook pages there is something there that we wish we didn’t see. I use to look forward to looking at new pictures or motivational posts but now all I see is divisiveness and negativity. I try not to get to political and keep my opinions at a minimum but damn. Today I was happy to see this email from Manifesting Mamas so I had to share. I hope this helps some of you today!!!

Here are 4 ways to keep your surroundings positive:

1) Stay in your lane and try not to watch the news

I don’t mean this as a turn inward ignore reality kind of escapism. But you can find out the details of what you need to know without drowning yourself in the constant negativity of the media. You can choose the channels you tune into. By all means pray, send love, donate, have compassion, but don’t feel the need to obsessively watch the news.

2) Stay off social media

…or at least don’t get sucked into arguments or political discussions. Browse, read, then move on. You can agree or disagree, but before getting sucked into commenting, ask yourself, is it worth ruining your vibration by spending your time in these types of discussion? Arguing is by nature resistance. Resistance means you are not in allowing. When you are not in allowing your capacity to receive what you desire is blocked.

3) Focus on joy and love

These are the two highest vibrations you can experience. When you are in the vibration of joy and love, you will attract things of that frequency to you. More joy? More love? Yes please. You are an energetic being. Everything in the Universe is energy. Keep your vibration high at all costs. Spend time with people you like being around. Do things that bring you joy. Listen to music. Laugh. Be happy.

4) Visualize change

Since we know that what we see around us affects how we feel, it’s important to make the conscious choice to choose something different.  When you visualize the changes that you want to make, it makes a big impact on your mindset. The more you can see the changes you desire, the more you’re actually likely to make these changes come true. Your imagination is your greatest asset in helping you manifest. You need to imagine what you want to happen, what you want to manifest.

Universal laws and conscious creation are not something you can just pick up and put down in your life when it’s convenient and expect to manifest what you desire.

Thinking in this manner and leveraging these laws to create what you desire is a way of being.

In love and joy,

Dani and Shira

Quick Recipe Idea

Don’t you just love when people ask you what do you do all day? As a stay at home wife/mom/mompreneur /school volunteer/tutor/housekeeper, I know that you don’t just sit at home all day or play tennis. We wear many hats. Most of us have mastered the art of juggling running the  household and our businesses. I must admit, #Momlife definitely isn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be. After running around all day the magic question comes out, “what’s for dinner?” It can be very challenging trying to feed your family healthy nutritious meals every day. A few weeks ago I discovered stir-frying. I never really thought much about it. (I don’t know why not) It is so easy and makes a great meal in like twenty minutes. It’s perfect for those long days after basketball or soccer practice. Try mixing your favorite veggies with chicken or shrimp and add over jasmine rice or pasta and voila dinner is done! What are your favorite go to meals? Share them with us at info@sportymommas.com! Happy Hump Day!

P.S.

Most grocery stores have a prepackaged stir-fry mix ready to go!!!! #wholefoods #freshmarket #publix
