TGIF: LMNT Event

Last night I had the opportunity to showcase Sporty Mommas at LMNT! It’s a cool art museum in Midtown. They host parties, weddings and other special events. Tonight it was all about gaining money for your business. I met some really cool people doing some neat things. From make up artists to a detective that trained people to use fire arms. There was a sweet lady from New York and her son that is a chef. It is always good to network and see what other entrepreneurs are up to.

It is the weekend baby!!! And it is a busy one. I have a photo shoot and two birthday parties on Saturday. You know how we Sporty Mommas do it. Hope you all have a fabulous Friday. Keep spreading the love!

XO,

You’re a bad mom!

My breastfeeding journey isn’t unlike that of many other women. I had some good days, some triumphs, disappointments and regrets. In retrospect, I realize I didn’t do my due diligence as an expecting mother. I knew I WANTED to breastfeed and that was it. I thought it was something that would come automatically. After all isn’t breastfeeding natural? Boy was I in for a surprise. Although I breastfed my son until he was about 9 months; I weaned after returning to work and starting nursing school; I was unable to produce enough milk to exclusively breastfeed. Why you may ask? I didn’t understand supply and demand. What’s worse, women who for whatever reason, don’t breastfeed exclusively face an ever growing stigma. They feel like bad mothers.

This weekend during the premiere of BREASTMILK, we were introduced to women from various social economic backgrounds and cultures that faced a similar dilemma. Women that felt scrutinized and unsupported at work, at home, and in public. Think about it for a moment:

* If you were returning to work, would you be able to pump every 2-3 hours, in a stress free, clean room (cannot be a bathroom)?
* At the hospital, did your nurses encourage formula?
* Did you leave the hospital with a gift bag filled with formula?
* Do you give women who breastfeed in public strange looks?
* Do you have a support system?

Women in our society have so many options and we should support each other’s decisions. We don’t know what difficulties someone is facing until we walk in their shoes. My lactation instructor Gini Baker, would always say “You did the best you could, with what you knew”. This is a part of the reason I have chosen to work with pregnant women. To pass on the information I’ve learned on my own journey.

Breastmilk is BEST. Nothing manufactured can compare to it. I am an avid supporter of doing so exclusively. There are so many resources available to help you on your journey. Seek the help of a IBCLC or CLC. La Leche League has weekly free meetings. If you’re having difficulty, don’t quit and don’t face it alone. Find a group of supporters; after all, they don’t say it takes a “Village” for nothing!

Breasfeeding Week is August 1-7.

What I’m Loving Wednesday: #Antigua

I can’t believe our trip to Antigua is less than a month away. You know what that means…..shopping! I have been searching for the perfect dress to wear for the wedding. I don’t know if I should wear white or look for something else since the Bride will probably be wearing white. We have spent a lot of time researching the resort and all the great activities they have. I am a little nervous about leaving the kids for the first time. I know, I have to get over it. The hubby and I have not been on a trip in over 7 years! It is time. How did you feel when you went on your first vacation without the kiddos? #countingdown

The Talk Tuesday: #PottyTraining

You know the saying, “Every child is different”? It is so true. I have been pulling my hair out over how different my youngest child is compared to the other two. I mean I don’t really compare them. It’s just that what worked for them, does not work for her. Her theme song is definitely “I’m different, yeah I’m different”! I love her strength and determination but now it is two weeks before school starts and girlfriend needs to be potty trained!
Did you know that 40% of kids aren’t potty trained by age 3? I didn’t, so I don’t feel bad. I have tried the reward system using stickers or candy every time she pees. (She likes the stickers better than the candy) We have made a big celebration doing the potty dance and cheering for her. It worked for one day. So what strategies helped you potty train your toddler?

Make it Happen Monday: #Nosleep

It seems like I am still in recovery mode from our family vacation. My kids did not want to go to sleep last night or wake up this morning for camp. I think I may have gotten like 5 hours of sleep. I jumped up to get them ready for camp. Made breakfast, packed lunches and dashed out of the door. As I was walking into the gym, I realized there was something flapping on my butt. You won’t believe I put my pants on backwards this morning. Lol, that is what happens when you only have 5 hours of sleep. I made it to the gym 15 minutes late to work out with “Mike and Mari”. I never thought I would say I miss working out, but I really did. Now I am off to Kinkos to run flyers for Thursday night’s event at LMNT. Gotta keep pushing!!!!!

August MOM: Jennifer Austin

Filed under: Sporty Momma of the Month · August 5, 2013

Jennifer Austin was born and raised in Miami, Florida. At the age of 2o, she started her own business, a mobile gymnastics company. She has  successfully run several gymnastics programs in Miami for over ten years. Jenny and her husband Mike have been married for nine years and have three beautiful kids, Tyler (7), Kate (5),  Jake (2) and we can’t forget their American Bulldog, Zoe. In her spare time she enjoys going to the movies and reading a good book! “My favorite thing to do as a family is go to our home in the  Keys , take the kids fishing, then hang by the pool to cool off! It’s the perfect day!”

Q.  What do you love most about being a mom?

I love watching my children grow! Kids say the funniest things. Just when I’m taking life a bit too serious, my kids will say something funny that just cracks me up and puts everything into perspective! I am always surprised by their sense of humor and intelligence.

 Q. Who inspired you the most growing up?

My mom and grandma were a HUGE influence. Everything we did involved family and being together. I think that’s why my mom, sisters and I are still so close today. I hope I have that influence on my kids.

Q. When did you discover your love for gymnastics?

I joined the cheerleading team in Jr. High and our team was really competitive. It was back when cheerleading was becoming a really big deal and all the top teams could do gymnastics. I learned to tumble and haven’t stopped since!

 Q.  What is Ta-Da Kidz?

Tada! is a place the whole family can enjoy. We are a fitness boutique offering specialty classes, awesome themed birthday parties, a cozy parent’s lounge and an indoor play area for younger siblings to enjoy. I wanted to create a place where mom could enjoy a cup of coffee (and actually have a conversation), while her kids were taking a gymnastics class, art class or upstairs in the homework club!

Q. How do you balance raising three young children, a happy hubby and running two businesses?

It’s hard, I’m not gonna lie! I find myself saying, “Stay Calm and Carry On” a lot lately! My husband is really supportive and I could not have taken on this new project without him. What’s so great about Tada!, is I can bring my kids to work with me!

Q. The kids are back to school in a few weeks, what tips do you have for keeping our kids fit during the school year?

Staying active is SO important. Creating healthy habits when kids are young is the best gift we can give them. I think trying new activities and introducing kids to different sports is great. Sometimes it takes a few tries till kids figure out what they love. Whether it’s dancing, gymnastics, soccer, football, whatever… just do something!

Some easy things to do as a family are bike rides, going to the park, or even walking the family dog. The important part is to Keep Moving and have FUN!!

 Q. What advice do you have for other Sporty Mommas that are still trying to find their niche?

Do not give up! You can do anything you set your mind to. Being a mom and raising a family is the hardest thing to do and if you can do that, you can do anything!! I remember in my 20’s trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Finally I decided to do a combination of all the things I loved! I loved teaching kids, throwing parties, socializing with other moms and making children’s fitness cool. That’s when I created Tada! Is it the hardest thing I’ve ever done? The answer is yes! But I love teaching my kids that mommy can do anything and setting an example for my kids makes it all worth it. Visit www.tadakiz.com!

TGIF: We’re Back!!!

My husband and I survived the summer road trip! It wasn’t easy with three munchkins. I cannot tell you how many times we had to say stop whining or sit in your seat lol. I am so glad to be back home where I can tell them to go to their rooms. We really had a great vacation. Usually we rush around from park to park, but this trip we took it easy. Yesterday we enjoyed the pool at the resort and we even did a little outlet shopping. It is August and that means back on the grind. I have some big things coming up for Sporty Mommas and I have to get this 2.5 year old potty trained in three weeks. Wish me luck! Peace, Love and dream big!!!

Summer Vacation: Day 3

Well today was our first day heading to a theme park. With the Hubby not feeling 100%, the doctor recommended we stay away from the parks for a day or so. The Magic Kingdom was packed and HOT! The kids had a blast. You ever stop and think about how much money we spend at these parks? I had a moment today when I was like OMG! The things we do for our babies. For the most part the day went smoothly until my son and I got stuck in the broken go kart. It kept going left and right on it’s own. The steering wheel was jammed and well our brains and back were rattled for five minutes. We survived and are chilling in the hotel. Time to rest up for tomorrow! Peace blessings and love!!!!!

Road Trip

Our summer vacation did not start the way we planned. We made it to Orlando yesterday around 4 p.m. Around 8 p.m. My hubby is rushed to the ER in an ambulance. It was like a bad dream. The worse part was the kids watching him on a stretcher. I let them finish their ice cream and drove twenty minutes to a friend’s house. Thank God for girlfriends. One thing I learned in the baseball world is keep in touch with ladies you meet a long the way. You never know when you will end up in the same town and need help. My girl kept me and the kids busy until the hubby was done being evaluated. Around midnight we headed back to the hotel and went to bed. Praying for a better remainder of the week.

Last week I had the privilege to attend a private influencer demonstration at the Apple Store. The Apple team shared all of the latest tools to help protect our kids online while using apple devices. I was so excited to learn about the safety features that Apple has in place that some of us may not really know about. Like…..how to set up a child account , protection enabled for teens, managing screen time, communication limits, and communication safety that is designed to help protect your child from viewing sensitive photos and videos.

Apple Watch For Your Kids brings the connectivity, fitness, health, and safety features of Apple Watch to kids who aren’t quite ready for an iPhone! Head over to learn more at apple.com/families to learn more! @apple
