January MOM: Maybi Iglesias

Maybi Iglesias was born in Cuba in 1977. She arrived in Miami at just two and a half years old.  She is happily married and the proud mother of two beautiful kids. Maybi is the Owner and founder of Sprinkles Magazine, Royalty Bebe Magazine, Baby Tots Den and Sprinkles Media.  She currently resides in Pinecrest Florida.

Q. Who influenced you the most growing up?

My mother did!  She was a very hard worker and she always taught me how to save for the “not so good days.”  She also taught us never to say what we have or don’t have.

Q. How long have you been a mompreneur?

I’ve been a mompreneur for over eleven years!

Q. What inspired you to create your own magazine?

After I had my second child, I took a break from another business.  After about a year or so, I started thinking about what to do next and since I’ve always wanted to do something in publishing, why not an amazing parenting magazine!

Q. How long did it take for you to really feel successful?

Well, to be honest, I always feel successful at what I do!  I put my heart and soul in whatever it is that I am doing and make it a point and a goal to take it to the next level. Dental seo improves your clinic’s search rankings.

Q. What do you love the most about running your own business?

I can say what I love the most is still having the time to be with my kids as much as I want to be with them and participating in all their activities.  I look forward to picking them up from school everyday!

Q.  How do you balance being a wife, mother,  and entrepreneur?

I wake up very early in order to have my coffee in complete silence and answer emails without being interrupted.  Being a wife is the easiest thing for me.  My husband is a family guy.  He is as much involved with the kids as me so we always have each other’s back.  We make time for date night and we enjoy going out with our friends.  Sometimes it will be a few weeks before we take a night off, and we’re both ok with that.  We pretty much know when we need a break and just take off!

Q. What advice do you have for a busy mom who wants to own her own business one day?

I say “GO FOR IT!”  You may need to take a pay-cut but the time you have for your kids, husband and family and just being your own boss is Priceless! To start building your business online, a professional like an SEO agency may have some recommendations for you. Speak with multiple Boston SEO agencies to find a firm that can help you achieve your marketing goals. Additionally, partnering with a lawyer marketing agency can help you effectively target and grow your legal practice through strategic online campaigns.

December MOM: Sharolyn G. Turner

Sharolyn Greene Turner was born January 12, 1953 to Lonnie and Lelia Greene in West Palm Beach, FL.  She is the oldest of five children.  After graduating in 1974 from Florida A&M University she moved to Miami, FL and began her teaching career in the Miami Dade County Public Schools.  Sharolyn is the mother of 2 wonderful children, Ronald and Sharonda and the grandmother of 6 beautiful grandchildren, Shayla, Shaun, Shalisa, Kenedi, Khloi and Andrew.  She retired from MDCPS in June of 2011.  She enjoys reading, journal writing, going to the movies, play dates and sleepovers with her Grands, and having a good time with friends and family.  She is currently working as an independent beauty consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Q. What is your favorite thing about being a mom?

There are so many great things about being a mom. We have the opportunity to bear fruit, nurture it, love it, watch it grow.  And with God’s help they become fruitful, strong, and loving individuals of society.  I am so proud to have lived to see my two children do just that.  And this brings me to my favorite thing about being a mom.  I have been blessed with six beautiful grandchildren who have captured my heart forever.  In them I see my children all over again.  So amazing!  They are funny, beautiful, talented and so smart.  They always make my day, everyday!

Q. After 37 years teaching, how are you enjoying your retirement?

One word – AWESOME!  Everyday I wake up and thank God that I was able to retire at a young age and live to enjoy it.  I must admit that it took awhile to adjust to having so much free time to just do me.  I really started to embrace T. I.’s song “You Can Do Whatever You Like, Yeah.”  I took that literally!  Now after two years, I’m refreshed and I’ve decided that it’s time to redefine this retirement thing. Now it’s time to reload and re-launch!

Q.  What does having your own business allow you to do?

Being an independent beauty consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics has opened up opportunities for me to make things happen.  The business allows me to meet new people, work my own hours, supplement my income and be a part of other’s success stories.  I found that it’s not only selling product and making money.  It is about empowering yourself to inspire others to accomplish their goals.  This company offers just that.

Q. What is your favorite Mary Kay product?

Whatever your age, skin type or preference, Mary Kay has a skin care product to suit your needs.  My favorite right now is the TimeWise Miracle Set.  It cleanses, exfoliates, freshens, energizes, hydrates, smoothes, firms, softens, protects, renews, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  You get 11 Age-Defying benefits in 4 simple steps.  It doesn’t get any better than that.

Q.  What is one thing that your momma never told you about motherhood that you wish you knew?

I thought my mom prepared me for just about everything.  The one thing I wish I had known was that I couldn’t fix everything.  I spent a lot of time worrying about things that were out of my control. (still do, LOL) Moms like to fix stuff and we sometimes think we have failed when it wasn’t our problem to fix.  Our children must experience hurt and pain as well as happiness and success on their own.  Everyone has to learn those life lessons.  Hmmm; maybe mom showed and didn’t tell.

Q. What advice do you have for young sporty mommas that may be feeling overwhelmed right now?

Obstacles come and go.  Three simple steps to calm yourself :

  1. Stop! – trying to do everything; it’ll get done eventually
  2. Look! – at what’s most important right now, do that and tell yourself – great job and move on.
  3. Listen! – the still small voice we avoid so many times will say “Peace Be Still”. That voice will save you mentally and physically.

Q. How can we book a free Mary Kay consultation with you?

I would love to book a skin care date with you.  Just email me at sggreene112@aol.com and visit www.marykay.com/sgturner

November MOM: Emarvanay Cochran

Emarvanay  is the wife of Donnie Cochran and proud mother of a blended family of four children  and  five adorable grandchildren. She attended Fashion school in San Diego, California. During  her time in California, she developed a unique design style, which has given her a reputation amongst her  clients for transforming ordinary jewelry concepts into extraordinary innovations in jewelry designs. Her hobbies include fashion design, painting, cooking and designing jewelry.

Q. When did you discover your love for fashion and design?

I have always been interested in fashion.  As a young girl, my mom was very talented and also enjoyed many hobbies (sewing, knitting, crocheting…).  With my mom, the list was endless. She loved to design things and I sat spellbound and soaked it all in.  I was always eager to help.  She taught me to work for what you want and keep pushing no matter what life throws your way.

Q. How long have you been designing jewelry?

I have been designing my own fashion since high school for my sister and myself.  Over a decade or so, I started Emarvanay Collection which offers a unique blend of jewelry designs.

Q. Who are some of your favorite designers?

I love Chanel or a Chanel inspired look, David Meister, Furla and Tahari.  Each one inspires me in a very unique way.

Q. What influences or inspires you to create certain pieces?

I get my inspiration from the material itself (beads or leather) or just an outfit that I have to accessorize or compliment.

Q. What do you love the most about being a grandma?

My grandkids keep me young at heart, and in stitches, especially the youngest one , Khloi.  Some of the things she comes up with that escapes her innocence are just hilarious.  We also have so much fun hanging out and shopping!

Q. Do you have any advice for other Sporty Mommas still trying to find their niche?

Always follow your dreams and do what you love, if not you will lose interest and everything will fall apart.

Q. Where can we purchase the Emarvanay Collection?

You can find my collection on my website www.emarvanaycollection.com and please follow me on Instagram and Facebook @EmaravanayCollection.

October MOM: Marissa Herring

Marissa Herring is a Miami native who began training as a competitive gymnast at an early age. She gradually transitioned into high school cheerleading, at Our Lady Of Lourdes Academy and became an NCA All-American cheerleader and a National Partner Stunt Champion. In 1992, she continued her collegiate cheerleading at Florida State University (FSU), where she was a member of the FSU varsity squad, that travel, cheered and competed at national levels. In 2001, Marissa married Kim Herring, NFL Superbowl XXXV champion. In 2007, after having her 2nd child, Marissa trained for and competed at The Women’s Tri-Fitness World Challenge. In 2013, she returned and won 1st place in her age group and 2nd overall out of 133 athletes. As a certified personal trainer, she motivates women to stay healthy and fit. Now, a mother of 3 children, Marissa continues to train and empower women to be their very best.

Q.  What do you love the most about being a mom of 3?

The activities.  There is never a dull moment. They are constantly keeping me on my toes  and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Q.  Who inspired you the most growing up?

My mom. She has always been a strong independent woman. Hustling around the globe. Taking us with her so we could experience different cultures. She always encouraged me to go for what I wanted and made sure I was on the right path. I had to learn some very important lessons on the way, and she was there to keep me focused.

Q. What is Garage Mama Fitness?

Garage Mama Fitness is a training facility in Orlando, FL for families to feel motivated, energized and bring out their inner “Rock-Star”. My training philosophy has always been to have a non-competitive environment where people feel safe and can focus on strengthening themselves inside so their bodies can transform on the outside. It’s about challenging your self every session to bring the “A-game” mentality and get results. We never have the same workout, and I believe in combining different training styles to keep your body and mind engaged during training.

Q.  Congratulations on a successful year of G-Mama Fitness and Trinity Sports. What is it like working with your hubby?

It has been interesting. I am the social butterfly of the operation, and he is the number cruncher. It’s a nice balance. We have found a way to work and yet balance our home life, by rotating our training sessions. We do see each other all day, but we are busy building the business. He handles his side of Trinity Sports Performance and I deal with G-Mama Fitness. We are passionate about our children seeing us love each other and work together as a team.

Q. Last year you competed in The Tri-Fitness Challenge, how was it competing after all of these years?

It was awesome. I won 1st place in my age group (36yr-39yr) and I won 2nd overall out of 133 women athletes. I caught the fitness bug in 2007 after my second child, and after my 3rd baby put 60lbs on me, I didn’t think I had time to get back into the competitive fitness world. A new business, 3 kids (2 in competitive gymnastics), a husband and time for mommy, made it seem impossible to compete again. My clients, staff and family supported me throughout the training. It was great to take 8 clients with me to the Tri-Fitness challenge. We are getting ready for next year!

Q. What makes those G-Muffins so yummy? Are they coming to a store near us anytime soon?

Good carbs are always yummy. I am a foodie and I love my carbs, so good old fashioned oatmeal is the base of the muffin. I figured out the right combination that taste great and still stay moist. Guiltless Guava came from my love for pastelitos. It is in high demand every time I bake. I’m hoping to figure out how to maintain the freshness of the muffin without adding the preservatives that store bought products have. It’s a work in progress.

Q. What advice do you have for busy mommas that want to stay fit but may not have a lot of time?

Be selfish. You need to find 20-30 minutes of “mommy time” to maintain your health and fitness. If you start your day with good endorphins, things will run a bit smoother because you have the right mindset.  Make yourself a priority and do not feel guilty about it. Your family will survive 30-60 minutes without you. If you can’t workout one day, at least plan and pack your meals for the day. You do it for your kids, so do it for yourself. It makes a huge difference in your energy levels throughout the day. Mommy snack time is crucial to keeping our mood swings from acting up. When I’m hangry (hungry+angry), patience goes out the window. Keep your hormones happy and keep your metabolism burning by eating proper portions and training safely and effectively. Some days I only train for 20 minutes because my health and sanity (lol) is a priority for me and my family.

September MOM: Erin Romero

Erin Romero is a certified life coach, wife, mother and daughter. She is happily married to J.C. Romero, a professional baseball player of 16 years. They have a beautiful 6 year old daughter named Jazlyn. She enjoys traveling, sports, researching, eating real food, farmer’s market hopping, listening to music, reading the Bible and spending much needed time with family and friends. Erin was a three-sport athlete in high school and received a scholarship for college basketball. She was also an All-American college softball player. She earned a degree in Physical Education, but Erin knew that there was something missing. Her interest in helping others achieve their personal goals led her to Total Lifestyle.

Q. What is total lifestyle?

Total Lifestyle is a dream that I had when I realized that I could help others.  It’s me, giving out any information that can help you live a better life.  That information can be anything from why you shouldn’t use a microwave to why fat-free foods are dangerous to your health.  I can write about your laundry detergent and I can write about your mascara.  I didn’t want to limit myself on what I could write about so that’s why I chose Total Lifestyle.

 Q.  How do you handle eating healthy on the road during baseball season?

It’s not easy eating an ideal diet during baseball season for a number of reasons.  My husband has been in the league for 12 years so I am going to give you some tips and tricks that have helped me along the way.

I was that wife and fan that loved (still somewhat love) the game.  I went to 98% of home games before my daughter was school age.

 Tips for home games:

*Prep before if not fully cook and prepare meals before leaving for the game.  Those consistent midnight dinners seemed a breeze whenever I would do this.

*The crock-pot can be your best friend.  Use it often.

*Leave before the game ends or if your hubby is a late inning player, leave as soon as the game ends to beat traffic.  This will allow you to finish prepping or cooking for when he gets home.  Try to convince him to eat at home as much as possible so that his body can recover with proper nutrition from the wear and tear of the game. Eating on the road for 81+ days is enough stress on their gut.

 Tips for away games:

*Always shop and bring snacks with you on the airplane or in the car.

*ALWAYS ask for a fridge in the hotel room.  Tell your husband you’re not high-maintenance and blame it on me, I give you permission.

*Find healthy restaurants, cafes, Whole Foods, farmers markets (yes I do that), and not only shop for clothes on the road but, shop for food!  Google it, Yelp it, whatever it takes!

Here are some of the things I like to stock up on:

grass-fed beef jerky, free range turkey jerky, raw or organic grass fed cheese, full fat organic yogurt, any fruit  or veggie (apples, carrots, celery,

cucumber, tomatoes, etc), raw nuts, avocados (my favorite), kombucha, sea salt and EVOO.  This is just a short list of the possibilities.

Two items I always have on hand when traveling are a high quality probiotics and activated charcoal.  The probiotic is to keep the good bacteria replenished while eating out and activated charcoal is for food poisoning.  Everyone should keep this on hand at home and on the road.

 Q. What tips do you have for teaching our children how to make healthy food choices?

I get asked this question a lot and love to answer it so thanks!

Listen up moms, it starts with us!  Whatever you keep in the house, your kids indirectly have permission to eat. If they see you chomping on chips while you’re forcing them to eat their veggies, you’re sending the wrong message.  Now don’t get me wrong, I eat chips but when I eat them, my daughter is allowed to eat them too.  If I have sweets, she’s allowed to eat them too, unless her discipline was not up to par that day.  Speaking of discipline, we need to be strong with our vision for our children and let them know.  Do not let them rule the house and especially not the pantry!  What if they don’t have that Coke in the fridge any longer?  Are they going to cry about it, maybe, but it won’t last forever.  Set the (new) rules and abide by them.  This includes mom and dad!

We strive to live by the 80/20 rule.  Eating ideally 80% of the time and treating our selves the other 20%.  Now if you or your child are recovering from a certain illness or condition, I would say it needs to be more 90/10.  I like to tell people that they can eat ‘junk’ food almost anytime they want as long as they make it from scratch with clean, nourishing ingredients.

Q.There is currently a measles outbreak in north Texas, how do you feel about vaccinations?

Love your questions Sharonda!  You need your own talk show!

Aaahh, vaccines! This is a very controversial topic as it should be.  I have been researching vaccines for about seven years.  When I was pregnant with my daughter, my mentor and friend Dio asked me if I was going to vaccinate my daughter.  Growing up in Alabama, my reply was, “Well, yes, isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?”  He replied, “I just ask that you research it a little.”  And that’s what I’ve been doing ever since.

I never knew that we could even question our doctor’s advice.  It’s our children and we should be able to, right?  When I saw some of the ingredients that were in vaccines, my mindset changed forever.  How is it possible to allow human diploid cells from aborted fetuses in vaccines?  Yes, dead babies, injected into our children?!?  What about formaldehyde, thimerosal (mercury), aluminum, monkey kidney cells, detergents, egg/bovine proteins, and many more?  I thought to myself, God did not intend to have these ingredients injected into our children.  What is wrong with this picture?

Did you know that the peanut allergy is caused by injecting the peanut adjuvant 65 and 65-4 into babies several times.  Their body builds up antibodies against peanuts thus creating the severe peanut allergy generation.  This is a common result of injecting things that are meant to be eaten.  There is a difference in the physiology and function between food protein sources that are digested in the gut versus from those injected into the bloodstream.

My daughter has an egg sensitivity.  I trace it back to the only vaccine she has ever had, the Hep B which has the egg protein in it.  Wait, why are we allowing infants to be injected with egg proteins when they are not even suppose to eat it??  Even worse, why are they being injected on the day of birth for a sexually transmitted disease?  Did you know that most hospitals vaccinate babies for the Hep B even if you ask for them not to?  It’s so common that nurses have been doing it automatically without permission.  These are just some of the things that raised red flags for me so I began to educate myself.

 Q. What services do you currently offer?

Right now I am working on getting my website launched.  It has been ready for about three years (yep, that’s right) but I’m finally going to make it happen.  After it is live, I can focus on local in home consultations and possible consultations online and over the phone.

Q. Any advice for busy mommas out there who want to create a healthier lifestyle?

Every person is metabolically different so you might not be able to eat what your best friend eats and you might not even be able to do the same work out.  What cross-fit does to one person, yoga does to the other.

*Education.  It is the best source of health you can buy.  You can always give back by helping your family and friends.  This is what fuels me.  When I know that my teachings are reaching beyond who I taught, I know I am doing it right.

*Prepare your food and plan for the week.  I have a bad habit of not planning but always keep enough food at hand that I can be creative.

*Learn to cook and learn more.  When I married my husband, I could barely boil water. (not lying, burnt many pieces of toast in the toaster).  I still make mistakes ten years later, often.  Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, you don’t have to be a chef!

*Always keep food in the freezer!  This is my saving grace, unless the power goes out.  I keep all my meat in the freezer and have plenty of options to choose from when deciding what to make.

*Buy meat in bulk from a farm.  (Ex: 1/2 grass fed cow)  It’s cheaper and you stock up!

*Cook enough food to have leftovers.  I try to do this every meal.  It’s awesome when all you have to do is reheat (not in the microwave) your food or create a different meal with it.  I often eat leftover dinner for breakfast!  That’s my favorite.

*Purchase a good countertop water filter for the season.

*Hit up the farmers markets and take your kids!!  www.localharvest.org  is a great reference for markets.

*Become a crock pot master

*In addition to eating healthy food, regular exercise can help you achieve a healthier lifestyle. Alternatively, you may start playing sports. You may draw inspiration from This water polo hall of fame Waneek Horn-Miller if you decide to start playing sports like water polo. Look for a nearby sports facility that allows you to practice various sports. Another critical aspect to consider is the maintenance and longevity of sports facilities. https://www.instafloor.co.uk/sports-flooring/ ensures that investments in sports infrastructure are durable, cost-effective, and maintain high performance over time. Regular care and the right materials can prevent the need for frequent replacements, saving money in the long run. This approach not only benefits the facility’s budget but also contributes to a more sustainable model of operation.

ELIMINATE: processed foods, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, vegetable oils, table salt, fast food, sodas, conventional meat, plastics, non-stick pots/pans, margarine, microwave heating, cleaning chemicals, chemicals in make-up, chemicals in lawn and garden, etc, etc, etc.

INCORPORATE: organic foods as much as possible, grass fed beef, free range poultry, healthy fats, fermented drinks and foods, unprocessed sea salt, raw honey, grade B maple syrup, filtered water, bone broths, real (grass fed) butter, etc, etc, etc.

Ask your mother or grandmother about how your great-grandmother use to cook and prepare foods.  That is who we should strive to be like!

August MOM: Jennifer Austin

Jennifer Austin was born and raised in Miami, Florida. At the age of 2o, she started her own business, a mobile gymnastics company. She has  successfully run several gymnastics programs in Miami for over ten years. Jenny and her husband Mike have been married for nine years and have three beautiful kids, Tyler (7), Kate (5),  Jake (2) and we can’t forget their American Bulldog, Zoe. In her spare time she enjoys going to the movies and reading a good book! “My favorite thing to do as a family is go to our home in the  Keys , take the kids fishing, then hang by the pool to cool off! It’s the perfect day!”

Q.  What do you love most about being a mom?

I love watching my children grow! Kids say the funniest things. Just when I’m taking life a bit too serious, my kids will say something funny that just cracks me up and puts everything into perspective! I am always surprised by their sense of humor and intelligence.

 Q. Who inspired you the most growing up?

My mom and grandma were a HUGE influence. Everything we did involved family and being together. I think that’s why my mom, sisters and I are still so close today. I hope I have that influence on my kids.

Q. When did you discover your love for gymnastics?

I joined the cheerleading team in Jr. High and our team was really competitive. It was back when cheerleading was becoming a really big deal and all the top teams could do gymnastics. I learned to tumble and haven’t stopped since!

 Q.  What is Ta-Da Kidz?

Tada! is a place the whole family can enjoy. We are a fitness boutique offering specialty classes, awesome themed birthday parties, a cozy parent’s lounge and an indoor play area for younger siblings to enjoy. I wanted to create a place where mom could enjoy a cup of coffee (and actually have a conversation), while her kids were taking a gymnastics class, art class or upstairs in the homework club!

Q. How do you balance raising three young children, a happy hubby and running two businesses?

It’s hard, I’m not gonna lie! I find myself saying, “Stay Calm and Carry On” a lot lately! My husband is really supportive and I could not have taken on this new project without him. What’s so great about Tada!, is I can bring my kids to work with me!

Q. The kids are back to school in a few weeks, what tips do you have for keeping our kids fit during the school year?

Staying active is SO important. Creating healthy habits when kids are young is the best gift we can give them. I think trying new activities and introducing kids to different sports is great. Sometimes it takes a few tries till kids figure out what they love. Whether it’s dancing, gymnastics, soccer, football, whatever… just do something!

Some easy things to do as a family are bike rides, going to the park, or even walking the family dog. The important part is to Keep Moving and have FUN!!

 Q. What advice do you have for other Sporty Mommas that are still trying to find their niche?

Do not give up! You can do anything you set your mind to. Being a mom and raising a family is the hardest thing to do and if you can do that, you can do anything!! I remember in my 20’s trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Finally I decided to do a combination of all the things I loved! I loved teaching kids, throwing parties, socializing with other moms and making children’s fitness cool. That’s when I created Tada! Is it the hardest thing I’ve ever done? The answer is yes! But I love teaching my kids that mommy can do anything and setting an example for my kids makes it all worth it. Visit www.tadakiz.com!

July MOM: Tobi C. Butler

Tobi Butler is the wife of Ronald D. Butler II and the proud mother of three beautiful children.   She grew up in San Diego California and moved frequently due to her parent’s military careers. After working several years in the insurance industry, she decided to pursue her passion for creating jewelry. In 2010 she launched A.K.A.K. Jewelry, proudly named after her children: Andrew, Kenedi and Khloi. “I started creating jewelry to satisfy my desire to be unique and different”, says Tobi, when asked how she became interested in jewelry design. Tobi goes on to explain what inspired her tag line: Express Your Individual.  “In a world full of conformity and rules, I believe that we should embrace what makes each of us unique, thus my tag line was born.” Tobi enjoys running and photography in her spare time.

 Q. What is the best thing about being a mom to three beautiful kids?

Being a mom is hands down the most difficult job any woman could have.  The best part of being a mom is that I gave birth to 3 little comedians. No matter how difficult my day may be, I can always count on a laugh from one of my silly kiddos. Humor truly is the best medicine.

 Q. What is AKAK  Designs?

A.K.A.K. jewelry is my fourth baby! I started my jewelry line in 2010. I’ve been designing and creating jewelry since I was 16. My creativity has always been an outlet for self expression. Each of my jewelry pieces is a heartfelt design, hand crafted using quality semi-precious stones.

 Q. Who inspired you the most growing up?

My parents are and have always been my greatest inspiration. Specifically my dad, who grew up on a farm with 11 other siblings. Despite his very modest up-   bringing, he decided as a young child to pursue flying. He was the first African American to become a member of the Blue Angels, a Naval flight demonstration team. He went on to become the first African American to lead that same team. This was proof that if you have a dream, even though you may not know how to accomplish it, when you keep going by faith, God will do the rest!

 Q. When did you discover your love for creating jewelry?

I’ve always had a love for creating things. I sold hand made hair bows in the sixth grade, then friendship bracelets, and even home made snacks. My love for creating jewelry initially came from my mom. She took a few classes and I would hang around being her shadow and caught on to a few techniques. As a teenager I made jewelry to be unique and stand out. My designs became very popular and that’s when I realized this could become more than just a hobby!

 Q. Where can we purchase your line?

My jewelry pieces are available on my website, www.akakjewelry.com. It’s also available on my Etsy site AK2 Jewelry.

 Q. Are you working on any other projects right now?

I’m currently working on a men’s collection. I’m excited to be working with some different materials such as leather and rustic metals. The collection is set to be released in early fall.

 Q. What advice do you have for other Sporty Mommas that may be thinking of starting something new?

The best advice I could give is to put God first.  Secondly, don’t be afraid to fail. Sometimes failure can motivate you to try harder; thus the saying, “If at first you don’t succeed, try again”. And last but not least, ask for help when you need it, no one is an expert in every subject.

June MOM: Monique Dennis Spence

Monique Dennis Spence is the founder of Positive Light Media, LLC, an empowerment company which specializes in products, lectures and all things related to inspiration, positivity and optimistic living. She is a frequent guest speaker and writer on inspirational topics and is also a public relations veteran having managed marketing campaigns for Allstate Insurance, Burger King Corporation, Toyota Motor Sales USA, and others. She earned a B.A. degree from Hampton University and an M.B.A. from Florida International University.  She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Jack and Jill of America and The Links, Inc.  She also sits on the boards of the Women’s Elite Power Society and Youth of Excellence. A divorcee, Monique is the proud mother of a 5 year old daughter, Sydney. Those who are also filing for divorce should seek the legal expertise of a lawyer who will handle processes like property division and alimony.

Q. Describe what “Motherhood” has been like for you?

Motherhood has been the most tremendous and amazing experience.  I thank God everyday for the gift of motherhood and for blessing me with an adorable little girl (Sydney) who inspires me every day.  Motherhood has broadened my view on every aspect of life and given me a clearer more succinct direction on my purpose in life.   Living, laughing and loving is at a completely different plateau and it is so true that you haven’t lived and you haven’t loved until you have had children.

 Q. Who was most influential person in your life growing up?

Without a doubt, my parents, Melvin and Elizabeth Dennis have been the most influential people in my life.  They provided me with a great foundation grounded in love and faith; and a moral compass to navigate my way through life.  It is because of them that I have such an optimistic outlook on life and truly believe that anything is possible.

Q. What inspired you to create Positive Light Media LLC?

PLM was birthed out of a life-altering period in my life where I was faced with quite a few challenges all at once.   I was going through a divorce, caring for my 4 month old daughter, and trying to re-establish my life all at the same time. I caught my ex cheating and hired experts for a Colorado lie detector test to confirm everything. The dream life I thought I aligned myself with was in fact the same life I had to walk away from.  I went through a complete transition and heavily relied on my support system, my faith in God and my optimistic mindset to push through this phase of my life.  I realized I had the power to change the direction of my life and began looking at the lessons to be learned in order to prosper.  Walking away from my prior life and blazing a trial for my new life was one of the most positive experiences.  I truly understood that in every challenge, there’s a lesson to be learned.  My inner spirit kept me in line with a path of possibility and I became inspired to empower, uplift and encourage others.  I published my first book, “The Quest for Positive Living, Seven Simple Truths for a Happy Life,” and Positive Light Media, LLC was founded.  I view every new day as the opportunity to share my positive light and inspire others through my enterprising movement to do the same.

 Q. Where do you see Positive Light Media in the next 5 years?

As an inspirational powerhouse and brand recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in the nation with products being sold in stores and speaking engagements being conducted globally.

Q. Where can we purchase your books, candles and other goodies?

www.positivelightmedia.com, www.amazon.com and www.bn.com (barnes and nobles online)

 Q. Are you working on any other projects right now?

I’m excited to be in the midst of planning RISE, our first premiere success summit for women scheduled for August 2013.  Filled with inspiration, speakers and strategies for success, this summit promises to be a supercharged gathering for women to become empowered and RISE to every occasion in their life (career, family, business and self).

 Q. What advice do you have for other Sporty Mommas that may be thinking of starting something new?

 1. Define what motivates you and where your passions are.    This is where you will meet your life’s purpose.   Someone once asked me the    question, “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?  I would ask all Sporty Momma’s to ask themselves that same question, step out on faith and become who you are destined to be.

2. Develop your own personal board of advisors.  Companies have made this a corporate practice for years to help direct and drive their business. Consultants from https://www.hybridanalytica.com.sg/business-consultant-singapore/ are highly recommended. Use your own BOA to help you reach your goals, bounce off ideas, or just be the cheerleader(s) you need to help get you where you want to be. Seeking advice from professionals like an Insolvency Practitioner Cardiff can further enhance your strategic decision-making process and ensure the long-term viability of your endeavors.

3. Be your own brand and not just an accessory.  Know your worth, know who you are and be able to communicate that in your everyday life.  Do not give other people the opportunity to define who you are.

May MOM: Paula Nelson-Shokar

Paula was born in Detroit, Michigan. She has lived in many wonderful places from Chicago to the Caribbean. She is a third generation graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Paula received her Masters degree from FSU. After teaching grade school for several years, she left the classroom to educate other teachers. She loves scrapbooking, photography, biking, hiking, and snorkeling. Paula visits National Parks throughout the U.S. and internationally. Two years ago, she became a mom for the first time.

Q. Who inspired you most growing up Paula?

This one is a very difficult question because I have been inspired in different ways by so many different women in my life. I am going to say my great-grandmother. I am the only person that has ever been allowed to call her by her first name, Helen. Helen was one of the great enigmas of my life. She was a walking oxymoron and the epitome of perseverance and utmost strength. She was a little Jewish lady that lived in a world of absolute racism. In public she had to appear to be white and not acknowledge her ethnicity and religion. In public, if she saw her grandchildren (including my mother) she had to walk pass them and not acknowledge them. Black people were not allowed to walk on the same side of the street let alone acknowledge a white woman in those days. However, on Friday’s she would send a cab out to her grandchildren’s school to pick them up for the weekend. She would take them to the beach and they would hang out what was called the country home. Apparently she would spoil them all absolutely rotten. She adored her grandchildren. Color did not matter to her, because she did not see color, she saw family. Helen was a very well known socialite in her community and extremely philanthropic. She loved her wrestling and roller derby just as much as high tea. She loved taking me to the beach and to the ballet. She loved to travel anywhere in the world just as much as she loved hanging out in her garden. Helen is my guardian angel. I strive to be like her. a woman of many worlds.

Q. How long have you been an educator?

I have been an educator since 1994. Education is not my first career but it is my favorite. The 80s were very difficult times in the business industry. I was feeling the squeeze and decided to go back to college. After that, I decided to get my Masters in Science, which has opened so many doors for me to share my love for science with students as well as teachers.

Q. What is your favorite thing about being a teacher?

My favorite thing about teaching is the “Ah Ha” moments. They are priceless. This is when you know you have touched and changed a child or an adult in a very profound way. Their eyes light up and that’s when you know you did your job.

Q. Tell us a little about your beautiful family.

First there is the love of my life. I met my husband when I was presenting in Victoria, British Columbia at a science conference. I married my soul mate a year to the day later in Calgary, Canada. After our wedding, we made sure to secure our marriage certificate and then obtained the Apostille for International Use to ensure its validity abroad. Years later we decided it was time to have a family. I was unable to get pregnant and decided that InVitro was not an option for me. I was not in my twenties and when the doctors said it was not guaranteed I knew I could not mentally and emotionally handle not getting pregnant. So my wise husband said, “Well we will adopt, that is guaranteed”. I did my research on the possibility of adoption. I was quite concerned about cost. Private adoption is very expensive. We stayed prayerful and one day I ran into a former colleague who had just adopted two children. I inquired and she sent me to the Children’s Home Society. As it turns out there are so many children right here in our city, in our state, in our country who need a “Forever Family”. So we adopted our son Sebastian two years ago and we are in the process of adopting a three year old little girl we are naming Victoria, after the city where my amazing husband and I met.

Q. Do you have any advice for other Sporty Mommas who may be thinking about adopting?

If you are interested in adoption, I recommend it highly. First of all, I truly believe that it is an honor and a blessing. Everyday I pinch myself when I look at my two angels that were sent from God. My children know they come from mommy and daddy’s heart. Adopting through agencies like the Children’s Home Society is free.  If you have considered adoption but worried about cost, go through an agency such as The Children’s Home Society. The process is not very long. We met Victoria in November, she moved into our home in February and the adoption will be finalized any day now. Most importantly, stay prayerful throughout the process and be patient.

Q. When did you discover your love for antiques?

Apparently I have always loved antiques since I was a very little girl. It all started with me hanging out with my Great-grandmother when I was very small. I always marveled at the beautiful furniture most bought from Live Edge Furniture Store in her home. On occasion she would bring out her beautiful porcelain tea sets for us to play with. These delicate tea sets had once belonged to her mother. When she would set the dining room table with her fine china and beautiful silverware, I knew then that there was something very special about every piece she would put out. If you’re in Los Angeles, Modern Resale designer furniture is a must visit. I knew at a young age that I loved the beauty and craftsmanship in antiques and have been collecting from around the world ever since. Every piece has a story.

Q. What can we find on ivyandelephants.blogspot.com?

Ivy and Elephants is collaboration between my dear friend and fellow antique collector Patti and me. Our blog highlights what we call “Vintage Urban Design”. This is where you can find mostly Victorian pieces that we have either purchased or inherited. We also showcase vintage items that we could not pass up in an Antique Store. It’s a place where people come to learn about rare items and their history. Patti and I are both educators and we love educating the world about our passion for things from the past.
