Sharonda Butler Stewart is a graduate of Florida A&M University. She is the wife of former MLB player Shannon Stewart. Together they have three children. Sharonda taught for 5 years in the Miami Dade County Public Schools before becoming a stay at home mom. In 2009, she created Sporty Mommas LLC, a lifestyle brand that encourages moms to look, feel, and do their best. Through sporty chic apparel, networking and charity events, the Sporty Mommas brand continues to inspire moms of all ages. In 2010, Sharonda was inspired to celebrate moms by sharing their favorite recipes and self published “The Sporty Mommas Cookbook”. Her desire to give back and serve the community has lead to the Sporty Mommas Charitable Fund. This fund is designed to provide support for women and children in the community.
Q. What has being a mother of three taught you about life?
After my first child was born I learned that the greatest gift that a woman could receive was becoming a mother. Multiply that times three and it is a blessing to be able to watch these healthy little people grow up and be a reflection of their parents. It has also taught me patience and the meaning of unconditional love.
Q. As CEO of Sporty Mommas, what keeps you motivated to continue when you hit a “bump-in-the-road”?
It is funny that you ask that because I have hit so many bumps lately that I stopped counting. What keeps me going is when I see a mom rocking her Sporty Mommas apparel or hear someone talking about how much they love our events. When ever I am down, God always sends a ray of hope through others that I am fulfilling my purpose.
Q. What do you think has been your greatest accomplishment in your business thus far?
The greatest accomplishment so far is that I am still in the game. It is not easy and I am not where I want to be, but I know each day that I am getting closer.
Q. What advice would you give to a Mom who is just starting a new business?
My only advice is that it will not be easy, but it will be worth it. No one can really prepare you for entrepreneurship you just have to learn as you move along. The important thing is that you keep moving along. Have faith that everything will fall in place.
Q. If you were writing a book about your life as a Sporty Momma, what would you title the first chapter? Why?
The first chapter of my book would be Down, Set, Hut! I would look at it like a football game. First you gotta get ready, next wait for the whistle (opportunity) and go. You have to stay tuned to see what comes next. : )
Q. If you could grant one wish for Sporty Mommas everywhere, what would it be?
My wish is that all of you know that you can do whatever it is that you want to do and do it well. Sometimes as mothers we forget that or put things off waiting for the kids to get older. Yes we may have to move at a slower pace but keep running towards the finish line.
